COMPOSERS AND TRAVEL, MUSIC, TRAVEL
Travel and music have always gone hand in hand. Composers, from Mozart to Liszt, drew inspiration from the landscapes, the cultures, the salons, and the streets they encountered while on the road. Today with online streaming, we can bring that same sense of journey. We created playlists for each Itinerary, specially recorded for DeSalvio Travel by renowned pianist Robert Poortinga.
Introduction
Travel and music have always gone hand in hand. Composers from Mozart to Liszt drew inspiration from the landscapes, the cultures, the salons, and the streets they encountered while on the road. Today, we can bring that same sense of journey into our homes, or even onto a cruise deck, through music. This is the essence of The Cruise Playlist Project.
There is something magical about music; it can trigger memories, evoke emotions, and enhance moments in real time. Imagine listening to Debussy’s Clair de lune during an evening stroll in Paris, or Chopin’s nocturnes from the sundeck of a river cruise while passing Notre Dame. It becomes part of the journey itself.
Working with DeSalvio Travel, a luxury Virtuoso agency, Robert has recorded and designed playlists that allow travelers to engage with a destination before, during, and after their trip, making every experience richer and more layered.
Why This Project Matters
Pre-trip, the playlists help you warm up for your journey and anticipate what lies ahead. During the trip, they elevate every moment, whether in a salon, on deck, or exploring a city. Post-trip, they allow you to relive the journey and linger in its atmosphere. Each playlist is tied to a specific destination or cruise itinerary, such as Paris, the Danube, or the Caribbean, allowing you to experience the region through sound.
For example, the Danube playlist mirrors the cultural diversity of this extraordinary river, which passes through Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, and Moldova. By hearing the music inspired by each culture along the river, travelers gain a deeper connection to their journey.

Cultural Immersion Through Music
We believe that music is more than notes on a page; it is living history. Every region has its own musical identity, whether it is the European classical tradition or the vibrant rhythmic dances of the Caribbean.
Composers like Liszt, Sarasate, Gottschalk, and Bull drew heavily from the places they visited, creating works that reflected local culture and lifestyle. Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsodies capture the depth of Balkan music, rhythms and expressions that words, in their belief, could not convey. Experiencing this music during a cruise brings a dimension of cultural understanding that sightseeing alone cannot achieve.
Robert’s Perspective as a Performer and Traveler
Having spent nearly two decades traveling as a concert pianist, Robert has immersed himself in local cultures, gastronomy, and musical traditions. These experiences not only influence his performances but also the ability to guide others toward meaningful travel experiences.
Working with DeSalvio Travel, Robert helps clients explore destinations in depth, whether on river cruises or fully customized trips. Music becomes the lens through which travelers can feel, taste, and hear a culture. It’s a way of living the journey, not just observing it.
Connecting Music and Travel: The Cruise Playlist Series
This project is part of a larger initiative, Composers and Travel, which explores how the lives of great composers were shaped by their journeys. Each playlist, blog post, and travel insight is tied to this initiative, bringing together historical context, cultural storytelling, and modern experiences.
