The Grandeur of Old-World Italy on Lake Como
There are hotels that offer a beautiful setting, and there are hotels that make you feel part of the history of a place. Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni in Bellagio belongs firmly in the second category. We have visited many exceptional properties around Lake Como, but Serbelloni stands out for its sense of history, its service and the way it preserves the atmosphere of a traditional Italian grand hotel while offering every modern comfort.

A Grand Arrival on Lake Como
Our arrival began with a rather challenging drive from Como to Bellagio. It took us around an hour, with hundreds of curves along the way. Our advice to clients is simple: arrive by boat taxi. It is more comfortable, and approaching the property from the lake is a far more fitting introduction to this remarkable hotel. Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni began as a private villa commissioned by a noble family from Bergamo. In 1872, the property was sold to the Société des Grands Hôtels, and the hotel opened in 1873. Today, it remains in private family ownership, now in its fourth generation, with the owners still living on the property.
We were welcomed by our hotel representative in the lobby, and after the journey, a coffee and a conversation were very welcome. The courtyard immediately gives a sense of the scale and character of the property. It is a true grand hotel: impressive, but never excessive.
That balance is what we appreciated throughout our visit. There is grandeur in the architecture and interiors, but it is accompanied by taste and restraint. The hotel feels unmistakably Italian without becoming theatrical.
Rooms with Their Own Character
We viewed five rooms and suites, and one thing became clear: no two rooms are quite the same. Some have wooden floors, others carpets, and the furnishings vary. This is worth discussing when booking, particularly if you have a preference. Through our direct relationship with the hotel, we can help establish which room will suit you best.
The rooms are intimate rather than designed around enormous windows, but the lake views are wonderful. Even the rooms without a direct lake view impressed us. Bathrooms were particularly strong, with beautiful marble and excellent showers even in the lower categories.
The suites are another level altogether. The Churchill Suite and the Queen of Sweden Suite both offer breathtaking views across the lake. We also saw a suite inspired by Como's silk-making heritage, with beautiful silk pillows and duvets. It was a lovely example of how the hotel incorporates the identity of its region into its rooms.
We also appreciated the way traditional furniture and contemporary amenities coexist. The rooms retain their nineteenth-century character, while practical details such as USB charging points are discreetly integrated. Modern comfort is present, but it never competes with the historic atmosphere.

History, Wellness and the Pleasure of Staying In
Serbelloni has welcomed many distinguished guests over the years, and some of that history is reflected in the names of its suites. For Robert, a concert pianist, one discovery was particularly special: a Pleyel piano associated with Franz Liszt, who donated the instrument to the hotel. Robert had previously seen Liszt's pianos in the museum in Weimar, so finding this connection at Serbelloni was an unexpected pleasure.
The hotel also has an exceptionally impressive spa, named the "Best Spa Hotel" in 2026 by The Luxury Spa Edit. At approximately 1,500 square metres, it is one of the finest wellness facilities we have seen in the Lake Como area. It combines contemporary technology with an atmosphere that remains consistent with the rest of the property.
The breakfast room deserves its own mention. We have rarely seen a breakfast setting with such grandeur. It is an experience to enjoy without rushing.
The hotel has 94 rooms, including 22 suites, and a strong focus on wine and gastronomy. Although we did not dine at the restaurant during our visit, its menu looked very appealing. We would recommend reserving a table in advance, particularly if you intend to spend most of your stay enjoying the hotel itself.

Is Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni the Right Choice?
We would recommend Serbelloni to travellers who appreciate the atmosphere of a traditional Italian grand hotel: couples, honeymooners, culturally curious younger travellers and guests who value history as much as contemporary comfort. It is particularly appealing to those who want beautiful lake views and the chance to enjoy the sunsets from Bellagio.
It is probably not the right choice for someone looking for minimalist design, a trendy contemporary atmosphere or a hotel centred on children's activities. There is a children's pool, but no kids' club, and the property is not primarily geared towards family holidays.
One practical point is especially important: book early, and give careful thought to your room category. A lake-view room is worth prioritising if the view is central to your stay. The hotel is in considerable demand, and the differences between rooms make informed selection valuable.
What makes Serbelloni memorable is its equilibrium. The service was excellent throughout our visit, the staff maintained an impressive standard even towards the end of the season, and the hotel continues to introduce modern comforts without losing its identity. For anyone who wants to experience the grand tradition of Italy on Lake Como, it is an exceptional choice.
