DeSalvio review of Virtuoso Hotel Passalacqua: The Feeling of Having Your Own Palace on Lake Como

A Private Residence, Not Simply a Hotel

Passalacqua is one of the five most exceptional hotel properties we have visited. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this was something quite unique. The entrance, the small chapel beside it, the impressive driveway and the valets ready to take over the car all set the tone. Everything feels considered, but nothing feels excessive or staged.

The villa dates from the eighteenth century and was built for Count Andrea Lucini-Passalacqua. In 2018, the De Santis family, owners of Grand Hotel Tremezzo, acquired the property and undertook a three-year restoration before opening Passalacqua as a hotel in 2022. Their vision was not to create another grand hotel. Instead, they brought a historic private residence back to life as an intimate place where guests can experience the feeling of living in their own palace.

That is precisely what makes it so special. With only 24 rooms and suites, the atmosphere is remarkably peaceful. There are eight terraces, beautiful gardens and different corners of the property to discover. The spa and gym are also positioned in separate areas, making the experience feel more like staying in a private estate than in a conventional hotel.

The light filters through the trees, the terraces open towards the mountains and the lake, and the whole property encourages you to slow down. One should understand the geography, however: this is the Como area, where the mountains shape the views and the light. Passalacqua is a place to enjoy the morning and the tranquillity of the day, rather than to expect the long evening sunsets found on the opposite side of the lake.

A Home Filled with History, Art and Music

The villa's history is particularly meaningful to us because of its connection with Vincenzo Bellini. The composer spent time here, and the property is associated with the creation of some of his most important operatic work, including La sonnambula and Norma. The names of the suites reflect this musical heritage, and the Bellini Suite is especially significant: it is the room in which the composer actually stayed.

For Robert, a concert pianist, the musical connection was a personal highlight. The property has three grand pianos, and the presence of music throughout its history gives the villa a character that goes well beyond beautiful interiors.

The relationship between Bellini and Lake Como also extends across the water. The celebrated soprano Giuditta Pasta had her villa at Blevio, now home to Mandarin Oriental Resort, on the opposite shore. She was an important figure in Bellini's artistic world, and the lake connected places associated with some of the great names of nineteenth-century Italian opera.

Inside Passalacqua, the historic details are everywhere: original frescoes, the extraordinary entrance door, carefully selected furniture, the owners' private art collection and beautiful Asian porcelain in the public bathrooms. The result is what we would describe as royal taste. It reminded us of the peaceful, intimate atmosphere we experienced at Olinto in Morocco, but with a distinctly Italian identity.

The Pleasure of Staying Put

We were unable to inspect the bedrooms because the property was completely sold out during our visit. This is not unusual for Lake Como, where demand for the best properties is exceptionally high. We were fortunate that Gaia gave us a thorough tour of the public spaces and that we could experience the kitchen's approach to food over an excellent lunch.

The food was one of the highlights. Marisa's slow-cooked and braised celeriac was a piece of art, while the veal Milanese was excellent. The tiramisu, finished with mascarpone foam, was extraordinary. We also enjoyed a remarkable Lombardy PIWI wine. One small point: we would have appreciated clearer information that the rosé we initially selected was a natural wine, as this style can be quite distinctive. A minor detail in an otherwise exceptional culinary experience.

What impressed us just as much was the attitude of the staff. We saw guests who had returned for their fourth consecutive year, and the team remembered their preferences, including what they had enjoyed drinking on previous visits. There is a genuine sense of familiarity. Guests are encouraged to feel at home: to wander through the gardens, enjoy the terraces, read undisturbed or even visit the kitchen with a request.

There is a lovely example of this personal philosophy in the hotel's chickens. Children can collect the eggs and bring them to the chef, who will prepare something with them. Even when white truffles are in season, the kitchen's emphasis remains on creating a personal experience rather than simply presenting expensive ingredients.

Choosing Passalacqua: The Importance of the Details

Passalacqua is a property where room selection requires particular attention. Most rooms do not have a lake view. There is one room in the left corner of the entrance area with a lake view, as well as the Bellini and Beatrice suites. The principal suites also offer clear views across the lake. This is something we discuss directly with Gaia and the hotel team when arranging a stay.

We would recommend Passalacqua to honeymooners, couples, culturally curious travellers and anyone who wants to enjoy Italy at a slower pace. It is particularly suited to people who appreciate history, excellent food, outstanding service and the atmosphere of a private residence. It is not trying to be Grand Hotel Tremezzo, with its more visible grandeur and energy. Passalacqua offers something quieter and more intimate.

We would also strongly advise against driving yourself around this part of Lake Como. The roads are narrow, traffic can be difficult and the journey is rarely the most enjoyable part of the experience. We recommend arranging a water taxi instead. It is a much more pleasant way to reach the properties and to discover the lake.

Above all, do not book too short a stay. Passalacqua is not somewhere we would recommend treating as simply a place to sleep between excursions. Give yourself time to enjoy the gardens, the food, the spa and the extraordinary quietness. There are very few places where you can feel so completely at home in a historic Italian palace.
